Summer time on Sanibel Island makes August a great month to utilize the white sandy beaches, search for shells and enjoy your favorite water sports activities. It’s also a good time of year to take advantage of summer discounts on everything from hotel rooms to restaurant specials. Review our road map for an August vacation on Sanibel Island.

Take a Beach and Wildlife Walk

Get to know that beautiful beach you love. Enjoy a free Summer Beach Walk 9 a.m. to 10 a.m. Friday, Aug. 5. Meet at Sanibel Island’s Gulfside City Park and enjoy a beach stroll where you will learn about the beach ecosystem and get a guided exploration of the shoreline. Don’t forget to bring a shell bag or bucket to collect shells you find along the way. Read our blog on how to find the perfect shells for shell seeker tips.

A Wildlife Walk planned for 2 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. is also scheduled to show participants the inner workings of the CROW Visitor Education Center wildlife rehabilitation hospital. Tour the hospital and rehabilitation grounds. Don’t forget to take a camera to take pictures of animals. Children under the age of 13 aren’t recommended for this walk, which requires advanced registration. The cost of this tour is $20 per person.

Tour the Gardens of the Edison and Ford Winter Estates

Did you know that two of the greatest innovators of our time had winter estates near Sanibel Island? Both Thomas Edison and Henry Ford enjoyed winters in the warmer Southwest Florida winter climate. Visit the Edison and Ford Winter Estates 10:30 a.m. every Wednesday in August for a free Garden Tour at the Edison and Ford Winter Estates. Horticulturists will lead a behind the scenes tour of the property’s 20 acres of historic gardens, crop gardens and nursery. There is also a Garden Shoppe on site stocked with exotic, heritage and edible plants for gardening lovers.

Admission to the estates is $20 for adults, $15 for teenagers ages 13 to 19 and $11 for children ages six to 12. Admission includes tours of the property and buildings that include the Edison Ford Museum. The museum contains a collection of inventions that both Edison and Ford tinkered with on the grounds of their winter estates.

Southwest Florida Symphony Chamber Orchestra

Sanibel Island is also a cultural district hub full of art and concerts throughout the year. Attend the Southwest Florida Symphony Chamber Orchestra Concert 7:30 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 25 at The Village Church Auditorium at Shell Point. The orchestra is kicking off its 56th season with a Summer Staycation concert. Enjoy light, popular and classical pieces. Tickets are $25 and can be purchased here or by calling the box office at (239) 454-2067.

Every Thursday in August, the Sea Breeze Café  is offering Roast Rib Thursday.
